Preliminary Conference Schedule

IIE Pre-Conference Workshop

Location:  Auditorium, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, 1440 Canal St.

Agenda:

  • Registration and breakfast 9:30am – 10:00am
  • Boren Awards 10:00am – 12:00pm
  • Lunch 12:00pm – 1:15pm
  • Fulbright U.S. Student Program 1:15pm – 3:30pm

Conference Day One

Location: InterContinental New Orleans, an IHG Hotel, 444 Saint Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130

The conference begins with workshops of interest to both new advisors and more experienced advisors who advise undergraduate and graduate students. These sessions will include opportunities to engage with foundations.

  • Registration: 11:00am – 5:30pm
  • New Advisor Workshop: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
    • Session will include an introduction and welcome to NAFA, undergrad and grad advisor break-out sessions with mentor facilitators, and an opportunity to meet with fellowship programs.
  • Workshops for Continuing and Veteran Advisors: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
    • Topics will include assessment, holistic advising and professional development, self-care for advisors, conducting and sharing scholarly research about fellowships, Fulbright advising for doctoral and post-doctoral applicants, a grad advisor SkillShare session, and more!
  • Welcome Reception:   5:30pm – 6:30pm
  • New Advisors Dinners: 7:00pm – 8:30pm (optional, off-site)

Conference Day Two

Location: InterContinental New Orleans, an IHG Hotel, 444 Saint Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130

The conference continues with plenary and general sessions, as well as opportunities to network with advisors and foundations.

Breakfast and Lunch provided.

The day will start off with informal networking and discussion opportunities over coffee and breakfast.

Conference sessions will take place from 9:00am to 5:30pm and include:

  • Plenary sessions: a Community Welcome to provide updates on the work of the NAFA board and volunteers and present opportunities for member involvement, and a session entitled “What We Wish Advisors Knew,” which will focus on the impact and outcomes of nationally-competitive awards.
  • Two sets of concurrent sessions, featuring panels, presentations, and workshops from advisors, fellowship programs, and UK universities.
  • Extended breaks for discussion and networking.
  • An open business meeting.

After dinner on your own, we will reconvene for a Desert Reception from 7:30pm to 9:00pm with tabling and fireside chats with foundation representatives and UK universities.

Conference Day Three

Location: InterContinental New Orleans, an IHG Hotel, 444 Saint Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130

The conference continues with plenary and general sessions, as well as opportunities to network with advisors and foundations.

Breakfast and Lunch provided.

The day will start off with informal networking and discussion opportunities over coffee and breakfast.

Conference sessions will take place from 9:00am to 5:30pm and include:

  • A plenary session focused on NAFA’s Code of Ethics and Core Values that wille xplore topics including the ethical challenges of emerging technology and best practices for working with applicants who are not selected.
  • Four sets of concurrent sessions, featuring panels, presentations, and workshops from advisors, fellowship programs, and UK universities.
  • An exhibition fair for foundation/program representatives and UK universities.
  • Extended breaks for discussion and networking.
  • Election results and the recipient of the Suzanne McCray Service Award will be announced during a plated lunch (12:00pm – 1:00pm).

The evening is free and conference attendees are encouraged to explore New Orleans.

Conference Day Four

Location: InterContinental New Orleans, an IHG Hotel, 444 Saint Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130

The conference continues with Speed Share and a final reflection session.

Breakfast provided.

Conference sessions will take place from 9:00am to 12:00pm and include:

  • Speed Share: Interactive resource demonstrations and exchange for advisors to try out and then take home a diverse, but complementary library of scholar development tools.
  • Reflection Session: connect with conference attendees and prioritize the tools and strategies you plan to take home from the conference.

On Friday afternoon the newly-elected and continuing board members and executive officers will meet to plan for the new biennium.
